Modern Languages and Employability

The Modern Languages Department has welcomed three speakers during the past two weeks to inform pupils of all ages of the need for foreign language  skills in the world of work. Huw Morris, Swansea University’s Academic Registrar and one of the school’s parents, spoke to the Department’s senior pupils about the endless opportunities available to study abroad through the Erasmus programme.

These pupils also took part in a translation workshop held by Silke Lührmann from Wolfestone Translations, a worldwide company based in Swansea. Furthermore, Susan Jones, an Asset Improvement Engineer from TATA Steel and an ex-pupil, talked to year 9 about her career and the advantages of studying STEM subjects ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) with a Modern Foreign Language. There followed a workshop led by Susan, assisted by the Sixth Form pupils, on problem-solving techniques in the workplace.

In a rapidly changing world offering exciting opportunities to study all over the world, our pupils were certainly given food for thought! More information about the Erasmus programme is available at  http://www.erasmusprogramme.com/.
